Music: "Holy Shen" by Otto Vandermin (135 BU – 84 BU)
Modern Choreography: Rinaldo Toloff
Cast:
Vald Coffney as Jokum
Teresa Brun as Res
Neli Pars as Ronto
and introducing Agnus Mills as "the Gen"
Story:
Holy Shen is a dance written many years before unity. It tells of the love between Jokum and Res, who's parents oppose the match and who's transfers tend to, through a tragedy of errors, keep them post at different times.
Jokum finally risks his life through attrition to have transfer at the same time as Res's transfer. Originally this was done with an actual kill on stage. Since unity however, it has proven difficult to find a gen willing to play the part.
Agnus Mills is a Third Order Companion new to the world of Dance. Her brilliant, although short, portrayal of "the Gen" lends a reality to this piece that has been lacking, perhaps, since it was last performed before Unity.
In this modern performance of "Holy Shen" the stage is kept deliberately sparse, as is traditionally dictated, to let the emotions of the dancers be better zlinned. Unfortunately this is lost to the gen audience - something that was never taken into consideration when the piece was first written and performed, for obvious reasons!
The detail of the dancers transfer schedules is kept accurite with the help of a Tecton Channel who perfers to remain anomomus. The lenghts that Vald Coffney goes to, as Jokum, working himself almost to attrition each month before taking transfer with Agnus Mills during "The Kill" is a credit to the lenght that performers will go to for their art. There is no truth in the rumour that some renGens have offered to perform the part of "the Gen", being willing to "die for their art". There is also no reason to believe the rumors that there are still performances of "Holy Shen" being performed with actual kills.
"Holy Shen" is being performed monthly at the Imperial in NewTown.
