fallfield

Fallfield

The farm went out of business when she was just a child
She went to work when she turned sixteen
And now her husband owns her dry and yellow wilderness
In a marriage that's as bare of love as the fields are bare of wheat

In the winter she walks through the windbreak woods
her grandfather planted, she cannot cry
She's growing old with no learning or money
There is no escape, nothing to try

And all of her life she's felt this crazy fear
That springtime wouldn't bring back the leaves
Every year she feels a little less joy,
Every winter brings her to her knees

They work in two different factories
In two different towns
At night her husband acts like a stranger,
When he picks her up from work, he's wearing a frown

In the winter she walks through the windbreak woods
her grandfather planted, she refuses to cry
At night she prays for the will to live
cause she knows it's a sin to want to die

And all of her life she's felt this crazy fear
That springtime wouldn't bring back the leaves
Every year she feels a little less joy
Every winter she's a little more sure

(Day after day in the factory)
(Her mind goes mad in a secret way)
(Surrounded by steel, with blood on her fingers)
(She's fighting for her life, far away)

(Generations of European peasants)
(Worked the lands of their feudal lords)
(And then they came to America, only to find that)
(There are no new worlds)

And all of her life she's felt this crazy fear
That springtime wouldn't bring back the green
Every year she feels a little less joy
Every winter brings her to her knees

She serves her husband faithfully
Cause she knows what God made her for
At night he hurts her and they call it love
But they never got that child she was dreaming of

In the winter she walks through the windbreak woods and
Heaven only knows what she's searching for
Maybe an angel with a sword and a smile
Who will tell her it's okay to lose the war

And all of her life, she's felt this crazy fear
That springtime wouldn't bring back the leaves
Every year she feels a little less joy
Every winter she's a little more sure....

garden

The Garden

First the city took over the world
Then the city became a garden
Then the city, it died
And the garden, it run wild

There's danger in this garden
There's broken glass and broken hearts
You can walk forever but the city goes farther
It's a young and lonely world

And wouldn't you like to know
Wouldn't you like to know
Wouldn't you like to know what it happening?

The roots have cracked the roads
And there are leaves on the telephone poles
The sun is rising, and the city unfolds
Like a flower, and the vines are climbing higher

And wouldn't you like to know
Wouldn't you like to know
Wouldn't you like to know what is happening?

<instrumental solo>

You go walking, walking walking
Til you find the place where the sidewalks end
And stand there looking at the river
Might as well be a thousand miles wide

Cause the bridge fell in a hundred years before
And someone's carved its pillars into statues of the gods of war
You could never swim across, but it don't matter anymore
Cause the city goes on forever on the opposite shore

And wouldn't you  like to know
Wouldn't you like to know
Wouldn't you like to know what is happening?

Purification

Does anyone know
Why Jane jumped in the river?
She had such a happy life
Why'd she do such a stupid thing

I suppose everyone knows
Jane walked cross the river on her way home
Every day, the same way
Regular as sunshine, regular as the waves

(Maybe she was thinking about it for a long time)
Maybe she was thinking about it for a long time

(How do we know?)
Maybe one day she stood looking down,
(Heard a voice in her head)
Mesmerised by the dancing lights
(It was talking to her)
Started thinking about her life
(And the river said)

And the river said, hey, you up there looking down
Don't you think I know the pattern by now?
One day, the sparkle caught your eye, and
Now you walk through life crying

Oh, you modern people
Drive over the highway and never look down
You've lost your religions
and walk alone in your crowds.

Does anyone know
Why Jane jumped in the river?
She had three boys, two girls
And a husband anyone else would have loved

I suppose everyone knows
Jane walked cross the river on her way home
Every day, the same way
Regular as sunshine, regular as the waves

(Maybe she was thinking about it for a long time)
Maybe she was thinking about it for a long time

(How do we know?)
Could it have happened nearly every day
(Taking comfort in the brilliance of the lights)
Become the strongest habit in her life
(began then to doubt her happiness)
So when the river said:

I know people
And I know you
Move a little closer
Step into my arms....

<drone and chanted repetition:>

(It's a beautiful day)
(You ain't got no problems)
(You aint got nothing to say)

<over the chant:>

With the wind in your face
And the sun in your eyes
Doesn't it almost
Feel like you could fly?
Wind in your face
Sun in your eyes
Spread your wings
Prepare yourself to -

<end of chant: sudden crash of surf, then quiet>

Jane had a job
and everyone thought she loved it
Cause she never came late and she never complained
All those years every day the same

I suppose everyone knows
Jane walked cross the river on her way home
Every day, the same way
Regular as sunshine, regular as the waves

Maybe she was thinking about it for a long time
(Maybe she was thinking about it for a long time)

(How do we know?)
Maybe one evening in the darkness
(The voice inside could no longer be ignored)
She looked down into the shadows far below
(The moon on the water seductive, submissive)
And it said: you are unloved and ungifted

But I know all secrets
And I will share them with you
Move a little closer
Jump into my arms

And in my gentle embrace I will bear you
Down past the city lights
And all of the stars in heaven
Will sing you a lullaby

Your cold will turn to warmth
And the pain will fade away
The fields of weeds and the railroad tracks
Will bear witness to your
(Purification)

(And you will never find your way home)
Oh, and she hungered for that peace
A peace she had never known
And she never found her way home

I suppose everyone knows
Why you walk over the river on your way home
Every day, the same way
Regular as sushine, regular as the waves

And, you'll be thinking about her for a long time
You'll be thinking about her for a long time

silly

That's just silly!

Once there was a bicycle that learned how to sing
He'd prance around his master's house what a wonderful thing
Tra lalala lalala lalala
Tra lalala lalala lalala
Oh there once was a bicycle that learned how to sing
All by himself what a wonderful thing

There once was a cat that learned the guitar
She'd prance around her master's house like a rock n' roll star
Twee deedledee deedledee deedledee
Twee deedledee deedledee deedledee
There once was a cat that learned the guitar
All by herself she became a rock n'roll star.

Together they wrote a song that would break your heart
Alone in the house while the mailbox stood guard
Tra lalala lalala lalala
Tra lalala lalala lalala
Together they wrote a song that would break your heart
While the master was gone while the mailbox stood guard.

There once was an answering machine with an ear
He recorded their song once they'd practiced for a year
Twee deedledee deedledee deedledee
Twee deedledee deedledee deedledee
There once was an answering machine with an ear
He recorded their song while the fridge engineered.

Then proudly they waited for their master to hear it
Too bad this message I just left totally obscured it
Tra hahaha hahaha hahaha
Tra lalala lalala lalala
Blood, sweat and tears oh God how it stinks
A year's work gone down the tubes what a terrible thing.
